Abstract : The stability of a magnetic film shift register as a function of film geometry, its thickness, and shift pulse characteristics was investigated. An alloy (82% Ni, 18% Fe) was vacuum-deposited on a glass substrate through metallic masks with longitudinal slits 0.5-5 mm wide at 300C; the films formed were 20-160 nm thick. The easy axis of magnetization was established parallel to the slits. The substrate was placed on top of planar aluminum conductors in which the current was directed perpendicular to the easy axis of the magnetic film. The drive conductor was 1 mm wide, and the information shift conductors were 1.75 mm wide and were placed in parallel and spaced 0.25 mm apart from each other. Shifting was done by applying two successive pulses of one polarity to the upper and lower shift conductors and then reversing the current and repeating the same sequence. Best results were achieved with a film thickness of 80 nm and drive currents exceeding 10 microseconds. For stable operation of the shift register, it was established that the shift currents must be confined to a range of + or -15%, with respect to nominal values. (Author)
