Abstract : The report presents a programmer's manual for the TAFCOM simulation model of tactical air warfare. TAFCOM can handle thousands of aircraft, with hundreds of bombers attacking tens of targets and penetrating through air defense areas with up to 20 weapon systems of varying effectiveness. Written in FORTRAN IV, TAFCOM selects ordnance and assigns sorties to targets, keeping track of ordnance used. It computes, in detail, attrition caused by SAMs, AAA, and intercepters, and the target damage inflicted. The model consists of 84 programs and subroutine subprograms arranged in 10 chained links. The dependent links are arranged in order of execution, so that backward transfer never occurs. Data required by all links are kept in core; for example, the set of distances for all possible routes that aircraft can travel within the chosen geography is calculated only once. Two runs through all links constitute two attacks, the roles of the attacker and defender being reversed for the second run. Two complete cycles compose a simulated day, after which the computer reads and records any changes in the scenario for the next day. Originally designed for the IBM 7044 computer, TAFCOM has been converted for use on the IBM 7094 and CDC 3600. (Author)
