Abstract : Experiments were run using a ship model tank and wavemaker in conjunction with a two-component force balance to investigate the nature of the lateral forces that plane gravity waves exert on a vertical circular cylinder. These experiments were run to check some assumptions used in the 'X-Y' method of determining ship model wave resistance from a record of the forces exerted by the model-generated wave pattern on such cylinders during a test in a model tank. The assumptions, which are that the forces vary linearly with the wave amplitude and are independent of frequency (or wave-length), were verified well beyond the limit of small wave amplitudes encountered in model tests. However, there exists some degree of variation and/or scatter with wave frequency, which is still not understood. In addition, mechanical resonance of the force balance was noted at the highest frequencies tested. (Author)
