Abstract : An attempt is made to establish the fundamentals of a general theory of thin plates in which the simultaneous appearance of such phenomena as large deflections, thermal effects, inhomogeneity, and plastic strains would be considered. The work is based on the theory of small elastic-plastic deformations, assuming that the plate material is compressible only in the elastic range, that the hypothesis of straight normals is valid, and that the deflections are comparable with the thickness of the plate. The discussion is limited to the case when the temperature varies linearly over the plate thickness, and all the mechanical characteristics and the thermal-expansion coefficient of the plate material are considered as known functions of the plate coordinates.
