Abstract : The author points out that although detailed design calculations for a parabolic antenna in which the dipole is out of focus are available, they are cumbersome to use, so that the derivation of approximate methods for determining the suitability of a given out-of-focus antenna is desirable. He therefore, derives simple expressions for the distortion in the antenna directivity pattern occurring when the dipole is moved out of focus in the direction of the mirror axis of perpendicular to this axis (for the case of a mirror in the form of a parabolic cylinder and a mirror in the form of paraboloid of revolution). The maximum permissible phase distortion which can be tolerated without affecting greatly the directivity pattern of the antenna is then estimated and it is shown that a phase error of 90-180 degrees still does not cause considerable attenuation of the directivity coefficient. The results are compared with the exact calculations and are considered satisfactory.
