Abstract : The Channel Evaluation and Call System is designed to improve the reliability of air-ground-air communications. It provides the aircraft radio officer with continuous evaluations of a number of frequency allocations from which he is able to choose the optimum whenever he wishes to communicate, notifying the ground terminal of his choice of channel by means of a simple built-in calling arrangement. The evaluations indicate the signal/interference ratio which can be expected at the ground terminal on each channel allocation, and trials have proven that the system eliminates the need for conventional time-consuming hunt-and-try techniques for making radio contact. A straightforward extension of the CHEC system could provide automatic selection of optimum communications channels. (Author)
