Abstract : By using a small computer, the solution for optimal train velocity and size on a level track can be readily found. For the case of passenger trains, the optimal velocity will often be an upper bound, since the curvature and track condition will not permit such a high velocity to be obtained. For the freight train case, the optimal velocity will usually be obtainable, since the method presented is strictly valid only for a level line, and railroad lines that are nearly level are likely to be nearly straight. The limitation of velocity on the ground (except for evacuated tubes) is due to the high energy costs of overcoming wind resistance. Unless the cost coefficients change drastically from their present values, the optimal velocities can be easily obtained using wheeled vehicles, and do not require air cushion or magnetic suspension.
