Abstract : Investigations on four ternary Al-Zn-Mg alloys with Cr, Mn and Zr additions have been carried out. Two alloys (Al-4%Zn-2%Mg and Al-4%Zn-3%Mg) were rolled and two alloys (Al-5%Zn-1%Mg and Al-4%Zn-2.7Mg) were extruded. Experimental parameters which were varied were quench rate and ageing treatment. Investigations performed were: tensile and stress-corrosion tests; hardness measurements; fatigue tests on unnotched and notched specimens at room temperature and -196C; examinations of microstructure by electron microscopy. Complete experimental results are given and conclusions based on these are reached. These indicate the relationship of stress-corrosion resistance to quench rate and heat treatment cycle, the relationship of ductility to quench rate, and relationship of composition to fatigue strength. An explanation for the observed changes in stress-corrosion resistance and ductility is offered in terms of the precipitate distribution in the microstructure. (Author)
