Abstract : Ethylene oxide was polymerized in hexamethylphosphoramide solution using sodium and potassium alcholates of the monomethylether of diethylene glycol as initiators. The reaction rates were found to be first order in monomer; they were zero order with respect to sodium alkoxide but the order with respect to the potassium alkoxide was variable (between zero and one). The rates in both reactions are depressed by adding sodium or potassium tetraphenylborate. Conductivity measurements on the polymerized solutions show only a moderate degree of ionic dissociation and the behaviour is not entirely that of a normal salt. Viscometric measurements on the living and dead polymerization mixtures show that the chains are associated in solution. (Author)
