Abstract : An individual feature of the Eastern Mediterranean is the steady association of shallow and intermediate foci in a narrow zone of about 3 degrees width. This and the unilateral distribution of epicentres indicate that the history of the Mediterranean Ridge is not similar to that of the Mid-Oceanic Ridge. There are reasons to believe that the median ridge might be a less developed zone of underthrusting. The rarefying of the epicentres along the ridge, the differing texture of the surface south of the crest and the abrupt cessation of the earthquake activity southwards of the ridge speak in favor of the notion.
