Abstract : It is forecast that, by the end of 1978, the U. S. airline pilot inventory will be about 47,000 and the total U. S. civilian professional pilot inventory will be about 150,000. The primary recommendations are that the Department of Defense: (1) Maintain a detailed long-range pilot manpower plan. (2) Offer long-term service contracts to insure needed pilot availability. (3) De-emphasize the college degree requirement for pilot candidates. (4) Improve the overall military living environment. (5) Initiate an industry-government meeting for problem definition and discussion and information exchange. (6) Implement existing research results in the use of advanced teaching techniques in pilot training. (7) Initiate studies in: (a) Pilot skill requirements; (b) Communication and command structure for pilot training research. Discussion and analysis are included for each of these recommendations.
