Abstract : Following the analogy between the Liouville-space formulation of spectral line shape theory and the classical theory of damped harmonic oscillators, the latter theory is reformulated and used in a simple derivation and interpretation of various results of line shape theory. Models are worked out for such cases as impact broadening, the transition from resonant to non-resonant line shape by momentum-inverting collisions, the narrowing by collisions of the Doppler width, statistical broadening, and resonance broadening owing to collisions of similar molecules.
