Abstract : Following the analogy between the Liouvillespace formulation of spectral line shape theory and the classical theory of damped harmonic oscillators, the latter theory is reformulated and used in a simple derivation and interpretation of various results of line shape theory. Models are worked out for such cases as impact broadening, the transition from resonant to nonresonant line shape by momentuminverting collisions, the narrowing by collisions of the Doppler width, statistical broadening, and resonance broadening owing to collisions of similar molecules.
