Abstract : Illumination flares have demonstrated their effectiveness for target acquisition and numerous other uses. However, due to the environments which constitute the actual use of these systems, other aspects such as reusability of any hardware by unfriendly persons become quite important. In addition to this, the operational method wherein these flares are utilized has changed considerably, and an additional problem of removing the systems from the air after burnout is in evidence. The aircraft effectiveness can be severely hampered by the systems not being destroyed or removed from the air at the conclusion of their usefulness. Thus, it can be seen that it is of extreme importance that a parachute be designed considering all aspects from both the performance criteria to the intangible aspects such as those mentioned above, to have a completely satisfactory system.
