Abstract : The report was concerned with presenting equations to use when calculating transport properties for monatomic and polyatomic gas mixtures. The transport property equations are those given in the first approximation by the Chapman-Enskog theory. The limitations placed upon this theory are discussed. It was found that the calculation of the most prominent transport properties is a straightforward process using the equations of the report and, furthermore, the results obtained using these equations compare favorably with experiment whenever experimental results are available. The principal uncertainty in applying these equations under conditions of interest to the hypersonic aerodynamicist rests in the empirically determined force constants for the inter-particle potential chosen and, indeed, in the form of the inter-particle potential itself. It was seen that the inter-particle potentials for radical-radical and molecule-radical collisions are uncertainly known, particularly at the high temperatures of interest in the report. Because of this, the results available for transport properties of air at temperatures high enough that dissociation is appreciable but low enough that ionization is negligible have an uncertain accuracy, perhaps plus or minus 25%.
