Abstract : The equations describing the stimulated Raman process, namely, the coupling equations of the laser light, the first Stokes light, the anti-Stokes light and the coherent phonon field are derived from the hamiltonians with the relaxation and dissipation terms phenomenologically introduced. The properties of the equations are analyzed by an approximation higher than the quasistatic approximation under the condition that the molecules are far from resonance. The threshold for the Raman maser is obtained from the discussion of the stability of equilibrium point. It is found that the production of anti-Stokes light requires no additional threshold condition, that is, the anti-Stokes light is a natural consequence of the stimulated Raman effect. The operation and the characteristics of various quiescent points of the Raman maser are also discussed. It is found that under certain conditions, there is only one stable equilibrium point (the quiescent point of the Raman maser) at which the Stokes and anti-Stokes components appear with equal intensity when the Raman-active medium is pumped by an intensive laser beam. Also discussed in the paper are the effect of phonon relaxation and the behavior of a Raman maser with phonons of long lifetimes. (Author)
