Abstract : An investigation has been made of a chemical propellant system using Be, O2, and H2. Be and O2 are burned in stoichiometric proportions in the presence of excess H2, which acts somewhat like the working fluid in a nuclear rocket. Specific impulses in excess of 450 lb- sec/lb can be obtained with this system (Pc = 1000 psi, Pe = 14.7 psi). Maximum performance is obtained if solid or liquid BeO and gaseous H2 maintain complete thermal and mechanical equilibrium within the nozzle. (Author)
