Abstract : Growth rates of thunderstorms which reach to at least 50,000 feet have been summarized for 15 April 1962 - 15 September 1965 for eight cities in the United States. Hourly increments were used. Growth rates relative to vertical wind shear and stability were estimated for four locations; Kansas City, Little Rock, Oklahoma City, and Amarillo. Preliminary results show that (1) growth rates obtained by hourly increments were much smaller than reported by other investigators using shorter time increments; (2) the maximum frequency of high growth rates was found to correspond with maximum frequency of penetrations of the tropopause both geographically and by time of day; (3) vertical wind shear had only a minor influence upon growth rates; (4) no relationship was found between stability and thunderstorm growth rates.
