Abstract : This study seeks to determine the effects of prenatal and early postnatal depletion of brain catecholamines and serotonin on an animal's development, behavior, and psychomotor capabilities. Drugs were used to deplete selectively the amines or serotonin. The effect of such depletion on cardiovascular reflexes, morphological development, psychomotor reflexes, learning, stress tolerance and infantile and adult behavior patterns were assessed. As well as making these specific measurements, the research was part of a program which is attempting to lay the foundation of a science of developmental psychopharmacology, and especially to develop experimental methods for such a science. Sound investigation of the relationship of behavior to altered biochemical states may provide important parameters for measuring potential behavior and capabilities of man. (Author)
