Abstract : Using the transient calorimeter gage technique, heat transfer rate measurements were made on small bodies immersed in a hypersonic stream of argon in the near-free-molecule flow regime. The measurements were carried out in a free-jet expansion with stagnation conditions, produced by an electrical arc heater, of up to 3000 degrees K stagnation temperature and 37 mm Hg stagnation pressure, giving free stream velocities of 1800 m/sec (M greater than 12), and particle mean free paths of 0.4 cm and greater. Measurements made with 4 models 1 cm long by 0.1 cm in width, were compared and the results indicated a reduction in the energy accommodation coefficient of 15% when the angle of incidence of the free stream decreased from normal incidence to 15 degrees incidence.
