Abstract : Permanent-mold casting of complex-shaped thin-walled titanium parts (a pump wheel with a wall thickness of 5 mm) is described. Casting was performed in a laboratory unit consisting of a vacuum arc furnace with an electrically heated graphite crucible and a permanent cast iron mold mounted inside the furnace. A forged electrode 100 to 110 mm in diameter was melted in a vacuum of 0.2-0.3 mm Hg for 2 to 3 min.; the molten metal was then poured into the mold by tilting the furnace 90 degrees. The casting was cooled in vacuum for at least 20-30 min, then air cooled. (Author)
