Abstract : The spatial distribution of the phase in the output from Q-switched ruby lasers was investigated and correlated with other operating characteristics. Several resonator configurations were studied including apparatus favoring suppression of either axial or transverse modes. Most results were for Q-switching by means of a saturable dye. The phase distributions were measured by means of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, modified by inserting an angular filter (mode selector) in one leg. Under conditions of no transverse mode suppression when the pumping power was of the order of three percent above threshold, phase measurements indicated predominant excitation in a single simple transverse mode. As the pumping power was increased, the observed changes of the interference pattern were associated with the excitation of many transverse modes. For the arrangement in which there was transverse mode suppression the behavior was similar, but one could go as high as twenty percent above threshold and still get an appreciable part of the excitation in a single transverse mode.
