Abstract : Excess noise is random perturbations added by an amplifier to the signal generated by an oscillator. A method to measure this noise is described, and the system is used to evaluate the noise performance of an electrostatically focused klystron amplifier at 2.3 GHz. The system sensitivity is -148 dB in a 1-Hz bandwidth at 100 Hz, -168 dB at 1 kHz, and -163 dB at 50 kHz for a 70-mW carrier. At 50 kHz the FM noise of the saturated amplifier is -153 dB (1-Hz BW) and the AM noise is -160 dB. Mechanical resonances of the tube were investigated and a 28-dB noise figure was determined.
