Abstract : A composite electric model was used to study the temperature fields on an arc heater anode and cathode under steady state conditions. The investigation included the geometric details of the electrodes, the change in external heat source (Ki), and the Bi change on the cathode internal surface and anode external surface. The thermal conduction problem is solved assuming axial symmetry with boundary conditions of second kind on the cylinder exterior surface and boundary conditions of the third kind on the internal cylindrical surface. For the anode, temperature fields were calculated in the range Bi = alpha R sub 1/lambda = 1.08 to 4.32 and Ki = 1.36 to 0.41. For the cathode, the corresponding ranges were: Bi = 3.395 to 13.58 and a variable Ki. Nondimensional temperature versus anode wall thickness curves show a minimum temperature near the arc burn. This phenomenon is explained by the temperature distribution in the longitudinal section of the electrode when a concentrated heat source acts on one surface and a boundary condition of third kind is prescribed at the other.
