Abstract : Two cascaded amplifying devices will have an overall noise figure given by: F sub 0 = F sub 1+(F sub 2-1)/G sub 1, where F sub 1, F sub 2 and F sub 0 are the first stage, second stage, and overall noise figures, and G sub 1 is the first stage gain, all expressed as power ratios. This equation is true in the usual case where the main bandwidth limitation is not in the first stage. The above relation is presented in the accompanying two-stage nomogram, the four variables being given not as power ratios, but in decibels.
