Abstract : To meet the needs for improved techniques of the frost-susceptibility classification, a laboratory freezing test has been developed using a Peltier thermoelectric battery to freeze fairly large specimens of soil contained in a ring type mold. The rate of heave of a soil specimen can be determined in about two days and the data indicate that a reliable frost-susceptibility classification can be based on rates of heave obtained in this way. A statistical evaluation of the error of the freezing test is presented. (BPR abstract)
