Abstract : An experimental investigation was undertaken of the potential of certain elastic instability mechanisms in the generating of low rise-time direct and torsional force pulses. Direct pulses were produced by the coupled flexural-axial response of a supercritically loaded column. The behavior of the system was correlated with analysis, and a system designed to operate in the range of rise-times of 10 microseconds to 50 microseconds. Torsional pulses were produced by the application of a dynamic axial surcharge load to a statically buckled twist buckling element. The system was found to produce a combined axial and torsional output, each having the same shape as the input pulse. A peak torque of 12 inch-pounds and rise-times of less than 90 microseconds were observed. (Author)
