Abstract : This is a continuation of earlier work where it was shown that when a crystal is damaged by a laser beam, its absorption spectrum contains no evidence of an appreciable local heating in particular sections of the crystal. Since the major changes in the absorption spectrum were attributed to both heating of the crystal as a whole and to the effect of the electric field, the authors used the same setup to measure the absorption spectrum under conditions when the influence of the electric field is eliminated, modifying the equipment to permit photography of the spectrum during the entire laser pulse. The crystals tested were CdS, ZnS, CdS-CdSe, and GaSe. In all cases a long-wave shift was observed in the absorption edge and in the interference patterns, owing to the multiple reflection or interference of the birefringence waves (when the crystal was placed between crossed Nicol prisms). The shift was observed when the spectrum was photographed at the end of the laser pulse. Although the temperature rise was not large (close to 10 degrees for CdS and ZnS and more for the other crystals), it is concluded that the changes in the spectrum are due to the thermal effects.
