Abstract : The finite element method is used to determine the displacements, stresses, and strains in axisymmetric solids with orthotropic, temperature-dependent material properties under axisymmetric thermal and mechanical loads. The mechanical loads can be surface pressures, surface shears, and nodal point forces as well as an axial acceleration or angular velocity. The continuous solid is replaced by a system of ring elements with triangular or quadrilateral cross sections. Accordingly, the method is valid for solids which are composed of many different materials and which have complex geometry. A listing of the resulting FORTRAN IV computer program and instructions for its use are given in appendixes. Two-dimensional mesh generation and temperature interpolation features allow the computer program to be readily used. The convergence of the method to exact answers with diminishing element size is demonstrated and discussed. (Author)
