Abstract : The report describes experimental studies of the growth of mercury drops in continuous supersonic and subsonic flows. By comparing the amounts of mercury collected by pitot probes of different sizes, the diameters of the mercury drops were determined as they grew from 0.3 to 0.7 microns. The pitot probes were shown to be capable of detecting and measuring the amount of condensation even when less than 1% of the mercury had condensed. The measured condensation rates in the nitrogen carrier gas-mercury vapor atmosphere agreed well with theory provided that a value of 0.4 to 0.5 was assumed for the sticking coefficient of mercury atoms striking the drops.
