Abstract : A new type of image panel design was evolved and successfully tested. The new panel employs an illuminated photoconductive layer, instead of corona discharge, to supply negative charge to the ZnO layer surface. By illuminating only selected areas of the photoconductor, erasure of corresponding areas of a stored image can be accomplished. In addition, positive or negative stored images may be produced from an input image depending on choice of the polarity of the potential applied to the photoconductor. A number of panel electrode structures including one with 100 lines per inch were produced on an improved type of tin oxide coated glass. These structures were essentially free of open circuited lines caused by pits and scratches such as frequently occurred on the old type of glass. Improved techniques for producing plastic substrate image panels, with emphasis on machining operations suitable for making large area panels were developed. New curing cycles for the epoxy bound powder layers used in this type of panel were developed in order to prevent loss of conductivity in the indium oxide layer. A 12 square inch plastic panel was fabricated and successfully operated. (Author)
