Abstract : A pyrolysis-infrared technique for the qualitative 'fingerprint' identification of some low-level surface treatments on glass fibers is described. The infrared spectrum obtained by pyrolysis of the treated surface will be characteristic of the room-temperature-condensable vapors of the major component in the treatment formulation. This method is not applicable for treatments which do not produce room-temperature-condensable pyrolysis products. The simplicity, rapidity, and reproducibility of the procedure will permit the qualitative specification and control of most polymeric film formers and lubricants. However, only a few of the silane treatments used on fiberglass can be identified. (Author)
