Abstract : The blast wave equations in an unsteady environment are derived. For wedge and conical nozzles it is shown that the density has a power law variation with distance downstream from the throat when the local flow Mach number is large. The unsteady flow field behind the blast wave is solved by a perturbation technique and the self-similar solution of Mirels and Mullen is recovered in the first approximation. An approximate expression is given for the shock trajectory as a function of the instantaneous energy release, the nozzle geometry, and the stagnation conditions. (Author)
