Abstract : On 18 October 1967 the VENUS 4 automatic station successfully penetrated the Venutian atmosphere, carried out the first measurements of its physical and chemical properties, and descended smoothly to the surface of the planet. VENUS 4 was launched 12 June 1967. Findings regarding the Venutian atmosphere were: (1) No magnetic field; (2) Concentration of charged particles in the investigated region of the upper atmosphere did not exceed 1,000 particles per cubic centimeter; (3) Presence of neutral hydrogen; (4) Measured data on the temperature, pressure, and chemical composition; (5) Carbon dioxide constitutes the basic component; and (6) High pressure, density, and temperature levels.
