Abstract : A claim made in 1965 that the NO3 radical is a major intermediate product in the combustion of double base propellants has raised doubts about the validity of the widely accepted view that the initial step in nitric ester decomposition is O-N bond fission. This note points out that the evidence on which the NO3 hypothesis is based is highly questionable; the alleged NO3 species observed is probably nitroglycerin volatitised from the propellant under the experimental conditions used.
