Abstract : The complexity of present day surface missile ships has imposed on shipbuilders a host of extensive system tests. The tests imposed in the past have generally been segmented in that they were oriented toward individual weapon system requirements rather than a test of the ship's AAW/ASW System as a whole. The responsibility for developing and coordinating these tests has likewise been segmented. With the advent of the Naval Tactical Data System (NTDS) the operation of the major components of a Ship's Weapon system has become even more inter-dependent. Overall coordination of the test developers is necessary to insure that the proposed tests are testing these components as an integrated Weapon System, are practical from the shipbuilding standpoint, are thorough and that unplanned redundancies, incomplete coverage or conflicting tests are minimized.
