Abstract : Little is known about the effects of prolonged weightlessness and acceleration on the muscular system. This survey reviews basic muscle physiology and discusses the possible effects of these space flight stresses on muscle function. Anatomical, biochemical, and electrophysiological methods for evaluating the state of the muscular system are reviewed. A selected annotated bibliography concerned with the effects of weightlessness and acceleration on muscle is also included. (Author)
