Abstract : Rates of thermal decompositions for six isomeric tetranitrobiphenyls were measured at 260C and 280C by analysis of undecomposed tetranitrobiphenyl. At 260C, the sterically crowded, 2,2', 6,6'-, 2,2', 4,4'- and 2',2,4,6-tetranitrobiphenyls decomposed at the rate of 1.6 plus or minus 0.5% hour, about ten times faster than the relatively uncrowded 3,3',5,5'-, 4',2,4, 6-, and 3',2,4,6-tetranitrobiphenyls. The gaseous products formed during 1-3% decomposition were found to be NO2, N2, NO, and H2O. Evidence is presented for the homolytic cleavage of C-NO2 bonds as a first step in decomposition.
