Abstract : An experimental study of the performance of a variable sweep hydrofoil was carried out in the variable pressure circulating water channel under conditions of reduced ambient pressure. A hydrofoil with tapered planform and typical sub-cavitating sections in the high aspect ratio (AR) attitude was attached to a base ventilated strut in such a way that it could be rotated, thus changing foil sweep. The attack angle of the foil and strut system were adjustable. Measurements were made of the lift and drag acting on the foil and strut as a function of attack angle, sweep angle, depth of submergence and cavitation index for both steady foil position and with sweep and attack angles continuously varying. Still and motion picture records of some interesting flow phenomena were obtained. (Author)
