Abstract : It is not clear whether the market for physician services can be better characterized as monopolistic or competitive. This paper attempts to shed some light upon that question. The tests are based upon inferences from two alternative models of the market for physician services. The first model is that of a monopoly, and is the model which the foregoing discussion of the market leads us to formulate. In the second model price is set by the intersection of supply and demand curves, as in a competitive market. (Author)
