Abstract : A detailed steady state theory of the stimulated Brillouin process has been developed and tested extensively experimentally using various liquids and fused quartz at room temperature. The principal results obtained are summarized in this report. Preliminary experimental results demonstrating the importance of the transient effects in the process under certain conditions have also been obtained and discussed here. Finally, the problem of laser damage of normally transparent optical materials is also briefly considered on the basis of the results obtained on the stimulated Brillouin process. (Author)
