Abstract : The parenchymal cells of the human liver taken by biopsy in cases of serum hepatitis were studied by means of electron microscopy, electron probe x-ray microanalysis, and selected area microdiffraction. Dense 60-A particles aggregated in an electron-lucent vesicular body were of iron compounds consisting of B-ferric oxide monohydrate. Mitochondria were devoid of ATPase activity in the present material even under low concentrations of fixative and lead nitrate, while the nuclear pore complex showed its activity. Acid phosphatase activity was revealed in the lysosomes appearing in the hepatocyte cytoplasm. The intranuclear inclusion bodies were found in the hepatocyte, and a very few virus-like particles 200 A in diameter were observed in the bodies, being surrounded by a single-layered limiting membrane, but without showing any relationship with acid phosphatase activity. Peculiar patterns of mitochondria were observed in the hepatocytes in three cases obtained recently. The increase in size and number of mitochondria as well as the occurrence of paracrystalline structure in the mitochondrial matrix may be the results of a compensatory mechanism by which the hepatocytes attempt to overcome the handicap assigned by the decreased enzymatic activity of the mitochondria, as shown by the decreased ATPase activity.
