Abstract : The flow field in the near wake behind a blunt two dimensional base in turbulent supersonic flow is investigated. The flow field is surveyed using total and static pressure probes, shielded thermocouple probes and photographed using shadow and oil pattern visualization techniques. Detailed surveys of pressure, Mach number and recovery temperature are presented for 7, 10 and 14 mm base height models at flow Mach number 2.25 and Reynolds number, based on model length of 1,500,000. Some results at flow Mach number 3.5 are included. The results do indicate a reasonably strong lip shock which is associated with the interaction of the separating boundary layer and the corner flow. Furthermore, qualitative indications on the flow pattern in the 'dead water' zone and the rear stagnation point are presented. (Author)
