Abstract : The use of Nd doped glass systems for high brightness or high intensity applications requires that the laser material must be free of metallic inclusions, of good optical quality, free of Fe(2+) ion impurities which absorb strongly at 1.06 micrometers and in many cases must possess these properties over large volumes of glass. This report describes progress over a six month period toward achieving this end. Two all-ceramic melting facilities are described and operational problems are delineated. Model homogenization experiments were performed and results are presented. Evaluation of glass produced from the all-ceramic facilities was carried out and the data are tabulated. Finally, conclusions drawn from these studies and a description of work for the next six month period are included. (Author)
