Abstract : When a bounded ultrasonic beam is reflected from a liquid-solid interface the measured reflectivity is found to be in disagreement with the theoretically predicted reflectivity when the angle of ultrasonic incidence is at or near the Rayleigh angle. Some possible mechanisms which would explain this discrepancy are investigated. It is shown that the magnitude of the effect and the frequency range in which it occurs is not a function of the liquid. It is shown that at the Rayleigh angle the incident beam is partly reflected and partly reradiated nearly isotropically into the liquid. (Author)
