Abstract : Five hundred eighteen men were available for evaluation prior to the third year of preventive periodontic treatment procedures. The subjects were in four major treatment groups and two subgroups. The groups received differing amounts of preventive treatment each year, and some groups received toothbrushing instruction. The gingival health of all groups showed continued improvement over the year. No statistically significant difference in the rate of improvement was found, however, between the controls and the treatment groups. The reduction in plaque scores was much less for the second year, with the controls (group 1) showing virtually no change (-0.02). Hard deposit scores showed practically no change since the first year of treatment. Calculus, when present, was found most frequently on the lingual surfaces of the teeth in segment No. 5 (mandibular anterior area). (Author)
