Abstract : A new criterion is given for the elimination of a stopband (confluence) of a lossless, dielectrically loaded, periodic structure, which is excited in a TM mode. It is shown that this criterion is also valid when the structure is excited in a TE mode. The nonzero group velocity at the confluence point that results is discussed in terms of the wave impedance.
