Abstract : Two methods of adjusting computers are reviewed. Adjustment is accomplished by setting adjustment elements in units and assemblies whose primary errors have the strongest influence on the error of the computer. One method is based on providing for the assigned accuracy, the other, on conditions of optimal accuracy (for instance, adjustment based on the method of least squares). In the first method, the quantity of adjusted errors determines the number of positions in which the assigned accuracy can be achieved. The second method makes it possible to provide for a good compensation of the errors and for their required distribution along the entire operational range of the computer. The mathematical apparatus is reduced to the solution of a system of linear algebraic equations for the purpose of determining the value of adjusting corrections. Adjustment according to the described method requires a large volume of computations which can be accomplished only by means of computers. (Author)
