Abstract : The study considers three aspects of the minimal time control problem for a class of linear systems. The class of systems is characterized by constraints on both the control amplitude and rate. The first problem that is considered is the minimal time open-loop control of linear time-varying processes. Based on the Maximum Principle, necessary conditions are developed for a specific modified adjoint solution. The second problem that is considered is the development of a sub-optimal closed-loop solution. A method of constructing a sub-optimal controller which is feasible for practical high order systems, is established. The last aspect to be considered involves the problem of recoverability. A necessary and a sufficient condition are derived. These conditions provide a test criterion that determines whether the entire state space is recoverable. (Author)
