Abstract : An efficient new application of the Fabry-Perot interferometer to study the properties of low-density gas flows is described. The complete optical system is briefly described, together with experimental and measuring techniques. The visual picture of a circular cylinder of 10 mm radius in a supersonic rarefied gas flow at M = 4 and static pressure p = 0.05 torr is shown. It is presented to illustrate the possibility of adjusting the interference fringes' orientation to obtain different fringe shifts with the same flow parameters. Thus an optimal tuning of the instrument is necessary for the study of flows under different conditions. The results obtained here attest a sufficiently good agreement with theoretical data and show the advantages of the two-mirror multiple-beam interference system described here. The density distribution behind a shock layer in a section 0.35 mm distant from the stagnation point of the cylinder is given in a graph. (Author)
