Abstract : A series of experimental programs were carried out to determine the suitability and sensitivity of a new test technique for the determination of hydrogen embrittlement susceptibility of materials. A simple bend test was used to study the effect of chemical milling and cadmium plating on hydrogen embrittlement of high strength 4340 steel sheet. The bend test consisted of loading a coupon in the form of a slender column in compression at a series of fixed bending speeds. Bend ductility was measured as the depression of column height at fracture and all data were referred back to a base line condition (non-embrittled) for comparison. (Author)
